In an effort to foster and sustain an entrepreneurial culture in Malawi, NBS Bank partnered with the Wealth Magazine and Lilongwe Pitch Night as a headline sponsor of Wealth Creation Forum which took place at Bingu International Conference Centre on 13th October, 2017. The guest speaker for the function was Vusi Thembekwayo, a renowned international entrepreneur and public speaker.

The overall objective of the forum was to develop an entrepreneurial ecosystem to enable SME’s in Malawi to be key drivers of the economy. This is because NBS Bank realizes that for Malawi to develop economically, SME’s play an important role.

During his presentation at the function, NBS Bank CEO, Mr. Kwanele Ngwenya stated that the bank has identified the SME sector as a strategic area of focus for business and has developed a specific value proposition for this sector which will see the Bank continuing supporting SMEs’ and entrepreneurial activities in the country in line with the government’s developmental efforts.

NICO Holdings Managing Director, Mr. Vizenge Kumwenda, who is also Board Chairman of NBS Bank concurred with NBS Bank’s CEO by stating that NICO group recognizes that Small to Medium Enterprises have proven to be a key driver of economic growth in Malawi as they continue to play an increasing role in job creation and wealth generation. He, however, pointed out that at a local level, a lot still needs to be done to create an environment within which SMEs can survive and thrive. Therefore functions like the Wealth Creation Forum are an important platform to facilitate the discussion of how the private sector and large corporations in particular can support government’s existing initiatives in SME development.
